A Real Turkey Deal

“Please pass the turkey. Oh, and I’ll take a side of penicillin, too.” Say what? If your bird isn’t organic, then it’s been stuffed with a lot more than just bread and raisins. Wouldn’t you like to gobble up the gobbler with guilt-free gusto? This year, choose organic, and truly enjoy that tryptophan-induced postprandial coma.

The Benies:

More of the good stuff: Organic turkeys are fed organically grown, non-genetically modified grains that are naturally high in protein and nutrients. The result is 50% more vitamin A, and 100% more omega-3 fatty acids, which benefit virtually every organ in the body, increase the metabolism, and prevent a host of diseases.

Another plus: Since organic birds are required to have access to the outdoors, where they get regular exercise, they contain 30% less saturated fat. (All data from USDA Sustainable Agriculture & Research Education Program)

None of the bad: Conventional turkey farmers lace their feed with antibiotics that cause unnaturally rapid growth and produce freakishly broad-breasted birds that balloon up to six times their normal weight. The feed also typically contains animal by-products.

By contrast, organic turkeys are drug-free, and their vegetarian feed has not been genetically modified. Organic turkey is also less likely to contain harmful bacteria, which proliferates in confined animal feeding operations.

Juicier, tastier meat: Organic turkeys usually are fresh rather than frozen, so they retain their succulence. Freezing causes dehydration and changes the texture of the meat. Defrosting causes the meat to purge even more of its inherent moisture.

Since organic turkeys are given time to mature, rather then chemically forced to grow faster and larger, the meat is naturally delicious with a firm yet tender texture
