Make Every Day "Take A Tree To Work Day"

Better use of paper in the office saves trees, helps the environment and even impresses clients!

You know that wasting paper is BAD (hence the sick feeling in your stomach every time you print out a seven days' worth of emails, then forget to bring them home for the weekend).  But did you also realize that just a few simple behavior modifications will have you green at Leo DiCaprio-levels in almost no time?

Five things to start doing this Monday

Always attend the PREVIEW.  Why in the world would you print out a document to see how it is going to look when you can view its exact doppelganger onscreen before you let fly with the Control-P?

Amaze and delight your clients. Buy RECYCLED paper.  As the price of recycled paper has come way down in the past few years, the cache of using it has gone way up.  Now, clients see a presentation on recycled paper and say, “Ah, there’s a responsible company that really has its act together.  I must write them a big check, right now!”

Seven Deadly Bins.  Sadly, to get some folks in your office to recycle, you’ve got to hit them over the head with a blunt object (Dave in Accounting, we’re looking in your direction).  As such, place a few extra paper recycling bins around the office, so nobody has an excuse for not using them.

Let’s talk to a regular cube-dweller just like you!

Scott from Chicago says “To get through my day, I need to turn everything into a little competition (with myself).  How many cups of coffee can I drink without using the washroom?  How many paper clips can I join together in 30 seconds?  You get the gist of it.   To save paper, I try and see how little paper I can use from Monday through Friday (and still perform my job in such a way that I won’t get fired).  Come the end of the week, the more unused paper at my desk, the better I feel!”

The top five tips for saving paper in the office:

  • Use recycled paper
  • Use print preview
  • Place additional recycling bins around the office
  • Print on both sides of the paper
  • Don’t print all your emails
